Behaviours, child development and SEN – Dr Sue Allingham takes us to a sophisticated level of understanding and practice
Understanding Brain Development
IDENTIFIED NEED
- Most of EYFS child behaviour and learning is an expression of neurological development which is little known amongst EYFS staff
- Responding to learning and behaviour needs to be in line with brain development or it won’t work
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Understanding of child developmental stages and how they impact learning and behaviour
- How this understanding impacts everything from room set up to activities
When Is It SEN?
IDENTIFIED NEED
- When is a child displaying a genuine delay versus taking their own time to develop?
- What kind of ‘delay’ is most commonly missed by EYFS staff?
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Understanding what SEN signs may be and when to take next steps
- Greater awareness of the developmental stages of your students

- EYFS staff may spend lots of time managing a child’s challenging behaviour without really making a difference to how the child behaves
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Understanding brain development in under 5 year olds
- Strategies to support behaviour issues in the EYFS and finding solutions
